《生活的艺术》读后感(三)：Report on The Importance of Living
Lin Yutang (October 10, 1895 – March 26, 1976), the author of The Importance of Living, was born in Zhangzhou, Fujian province. His free and refined writing style made him a distinguished writer as well as a translator, and his works which relate to ancient Chinese are always popular in the West.
This piece of work, The Importance of Living, was published in 1937, which was released at the time when Mr. Lin was working in America. It soon became another successful English work after My Country and My People.
In this book, Mr. Lin talks about Chinese people’s attitudes towards nature, human relationships, etc. He also talks about how Chinese people enjoy their lives. Take the appreciation of tea for example. Lin points out ten steps to illustrate how to appreciate good tea, from the ways of preservation to the flavor of beast tea.
This is a good book, which introduces traditional Chinese culture to the westerners. At that time, China was a mysterious country with abundant gold, which was the only thing the westerners know. Probably most of the westerners still hold this view. They hardly knew anything about Chinese, neither people nor culture. Therefore, this book blows a Chinese culture wind to the western countries. It also shows a vivid China for the American people, and it made the westerners realize that “Oh, it is the way how Chinese behave!”
However, there are some limits in this book. For example: Lin, as a man of letters, writes stories and opinions of intellectuals but not common people’s, for most of Chinese at that time were un-educated. Thus, this book can present a lively picture of Chinese literature-circle like the spirit of Confucianism, the views of Taoism, but it cannot draw the whole picture of Chinese.
Why do we learn English？ Some people may give the answer that we learn English so that we can learn the advanced technology from western countries. How about show the real China, like Lin Yutang, to the westerners？
